Homestead Exemptions

Homestead exemptions are designed to save Texas homeowners money on their annual property tax bill. You may know that every residential homestead qualifies for a $25,000 state-mandated school exemption, lowering the taxable value of the property, but did you know that homeowners who are disabled or who are 65 or older qualify for an additional state-mandated school exemption of $10,000? And disabled veterans and certain dependents of veterans may qualify for an additional exemption.

Local entities may also offer local option homestead exemptions, which could further lower your tax liability. Please check with your local taxing entities to see if they offer a local option homestead exemption. If not, ask them to implement one!

The infographic below explains who can benefit from state-mandated school homestead exemptions and how they save Texas homeowners money. Plug in your own numbers to calculate your savings.
